What
is a domain Name?
|
Domain
name (e.g. www.yourbusiness.com) is your Internet
identity. It has to be unique like your business
name and telephone numbers.
Basically,
a domain name is an easy-to-remember name,
made up of letters and/or numbers. Every
web address or domain name on the Internet
universe camouflages a unique server number
called IP address.

Constituents
of a domain name: |
A
typical domain name comes in two parts, separated
by a dot(.). The part to the right of the
dot is called the top-level domain (TLD)
as in www.LimelightGlobal.com,
If
you have international interests, then you might
choose:
- .com
if you are a commercial entity.
-
.org if you are a non-profit organization.
-
.net is for hosting services and other
entities having to do with the Internet.
There
are other TLDs too e.g., .name(individuals),
.gov(government), .aero
(air-transport industry), .biz(business),
.coop(cooperatives), .info(information),
.pro(professionals), .edu(universities
etc). These are used for specific objectives and
requirements. They are actually from US and used
for international purposes.
If on the other hand, your operations are generally
restricted to one country or you wish to be recognised
as being based in a particular country then your
website would need to have the TLD relating to
that country.
- .com.au
if you are a commercial entity in Australia.
- .org.uk
if you are a non-profit organisation in UK.
The
TLD from different countries will have respective
identifiers at the end:
- .au
is Australia
- .de
is Germany (Deutschland)
-
.fr is France
Therefore,
a business located in Australia having Australia-wide
interests would have domain name like www.abusiness.com.au
Sub-Domains: |
Having
chosen a Top Level Domain, you then have to decide
upon the part that is going to be your unique
address. You can use any combination of the letters
a-z, and the digits 0-9 (the name
must start with an alphabetic character). You
may also use a hyphen character "-"
to make the name more readable.
Use
your company name, the name of a major product
line, or a word or phrase evocative of your line
of business. Generally speaking, the shorter the
name, the better, since it will be more easily
remembered, for example: www.mybiz.com.au.
Do
I have to have my own domain name? |
Of
course not. Your home page can be located in a
subdirectory under your hosting service's domain,
for example: http://www.xyzhosting.com/yourbusiness/
Even
if you have only a rudimentary website or
none at all, it may be worth registering
a domain, so that you can use it in your
email address. Yourname@yourbiz.com makes
you look like a legitimate concern, like
having your own letterhead.
Whatever
you do, don't use one of the "free"
email services or an online service like
AOL as your business email address. A business
that uses an email address ending in hotmail.com
or aol.com will be dismissed as at best
clueless about the Web, and at worst a fly-by-night
outfit.

What
we do for you: |
Other
than developing an effective website that your
business deserves and getting a suitable hosting,
we also take care of registering your domain name
for you.
There
are few registrars who are expensive and have
monopoly on certain TLDs, for example VeriSign
still operates .com registry services. Other registrars
have to pay a fee for every domain names that
they register at .com. We arrange the best registrar
for you offering low rates.
While registering a domain name there are few
matters to be taken care, for example the proposed
name must not be a copyright or trademark
of someone else otherwise it would end up in a
mess of lawsuits. The minimum period for which
a domain name can be registered is 1 year. You
need to make sure to renew a domain name before
it expires, or you may lose it to somebody. We
will take care of all that for you.
If you don't yet have a website but there is a
domain name that you want now, you can register
it and use domain parking which is a cheap
way to display an "Under Construction"
message.
If you really want some specific domain name that
is already in use, we could try to offer to buy
it from its current holder for you.
